Installation tips for LED lighting

Connecting LED worklights and LED spotlights is no rocket science but some basic knowledge is required. What to think of before getting started:

  • Check the specific laws and regulations in your country. Not all LED lights are permitted for use on public roads. Also, there are regulations regarding the placement of lights on the vehicle.
  • Work with a cable of the appropriate diameter. A cable that is too thin can cause the lamp to fail or even cause a fire because the cable gets excessively hot. The table below shows the minimum wire diameter in mm² per cable length and power rating. Ampère = Wattage of the lamp divided by the Voltage of the battery (usually 12V or 24V).
  • Use a relay at high current voltages to prevent short circuits. A relay switches the current circuit between the lamp and the battery but needs very little current itself. Therefore, the wiring between the switch and the relay does not need to be as thick. Also, the wiring between the lamp and the battery can be kept shorter.
  • First, test on your workbench how the light works and should be connected. This will save frustration while you are in difficult bends under the dashboard.
  • Make sure you have a waterproof roof grommet to prevent leakage and short circuits. Scanstrut has excellent solutions for this. Check out our extensive range here.
