Replacement headlights must meet European standards for safety, water tightness and prevention of short circuits (ECE-R37). These standards are based on the old incandescent and halogen lamps. LED replacement headlights cannot meet these standards because they do not contain a filament. That is why they do not get the E-mark R37 and are therefore not officially allowed to be used on public roads. Motorists can be fined by the police during a check, even though the light pattern of the lamp does pass the MOT.
